After working as a teaching assistant for Peter Voulkos at the University of California, Berkeley ceramics department, Roland branched out on his own to make original ceramic sculptures.
Pushing and fighting up to 100 pounds of clay to form his pieces, it might take days to finalize its shape. After the first firing, the glazing and refiring to get a final creation will take days more.
Early works were in gas or wood-fired kilns. Recent sculptures are fired in a state-of-the-art electric Nabertherm kiln capable of holding pieces up to 43 inches tall.
